Carbon Sound and The Avant Garde have partnered to present “The B-Side” on Wednesday, September 30, 7 PM–10 PM at Icehouse.
“The B-Side” is a new networking mix & mingle, and workshop geared toward bringing together music artists, creatives, entrepreneurs, and professionals for an evening of insight, conversation, vibing, connection, and information where everyone leaves with something they can use to better their career.
The topic of discussion for this month’s event will be “More Than Music: Identity, Branding & Positioning.” Hosted and moderated by Chadwick “Niles” Phillips. The interview with Nur-D will share insight from his journey as a successful independent artist as he goes into his experiences that have helped shape his identity, brand, and successful career as an artist.
The night will also feature a live performance by Nakara Forjé and sounds by DJ McShellen. It is going to be an evening to network, meet other creatives and professionals, build new connections and, most importantly, receive some great knowledge that can help further your career.
We will also be giving away tickets to the upcoming Chance the Rapper concert at The Armory for the 10 Year Anniversary Tour for his album “Coloring Book.” There will also be giveaways for free studio time at The SP Style Studio courtesy of DJ D-Mil.

Founder and CEO of The Avant Garde, Niles is an award-winning educator, entrepreneur, and music and entertainment professional with experience in event production, artist booking, creative direction, branding, and programming throughout Minnesota.
Nur-D — Featured Interview Guest
Nur-D is one of Minnesota’s breakout music talents, known for his energetic performances, socially conscious music, and commitment to being unapologetically himself as an artist. Since emerging in 2018, he has released 10 full-length projects, toured nationally, performed alongside artists including Ludacris, Brother Ali, and Earth, Wind & Fire, and earned an Emmy for his television work.
Nakara Forjé — Featured Performer
Nakara Forjé is a Twin Cities lyricist, curator, organizer, and author whose music explores vulnerability, healing, identity, and lived experience. A 2025 McKnight Fellow and 2026 Josie R. Johnson Leadership Fellow, Nakara Forjé uses music, events, and community work to cultivate healing and creativity, particularly among Black women and girls.
DJ McShellen — DJ
Michelle Ndely, known as “DJ McShellen,” is a Minnesota-based open-format DJ with Cameroonian roots and a deep, inherited love for music, quickly emerging as a rising force in the local scene. Recognized for her authentic yet infectious energy, thoughtful song selection, and genre-blending sound, she delivers a truly one-of-one, fun, and unforgettable experience with every set. Beyond the booth, Michelle channels her creativity into fashion and her community, working as a mental health practitioner and child welfare policy analyst—bringing the same care, intention, and passion to all that she does.
